girls vs. boys

Monday, 28 February 2011

I've barely been looking at style.com lately but that's purely because I haven't felt the urge to look and most people feel Milan to be pretty droll anyway. Either way, I had to take a look at the Dolce & Gabbana A/W 2011 collection.

I've heard some pretty negative responses but I happen to like it. The classic and beautiful black lace was still in abundance but this season held a lot more for the adrogynists out there: oversized blazers, tailored trousers, white shirts, porkpie hats and chunky brogues with ankle socks. With regards to the garish hits of leopard and tiger print, stars, jewels, bright yellow and music notes, some felt unusual at first but steadily grew on me. The updated bumbag certainly looked good.

While I'm sure some will hate it, I love the above-middle image for its mix of prints and ease - anyone else think a little of Frankie from the new season of Skins? I had to post the first image for its layering and awesome sunglasses, and the last image is irrestistibly feminine; I'm so glad the socks and kitten heel trend has stayed. Now if only my legs were a little skinnier to pull it off...

I relished in the girls vs. boys appeal of the collection and hope to take inspiration from both sides. What did you think?

Soap & Glory Make Yourself Youthful Super Rejuventating Face Serum
Bourjois Limited Edition Blush
17 Limited Edition Vintage Eye Palette - Pretty Pastels
Max Factor Max Colour Effects Dip-In Eye Shadow
Umberto Giannini Glam Hair Massive Mousse

Wandering around at work today, I kept feeling the urge to buy stuff - this is nothing new but I just thought I'd share it. I was pretty good though because I didn't get a thing. Well, apart from a Kit Kat Chunky and a drink.

Either way, I'd love these items to be mine. I tested some of that Soap & Glory serum today - because of a promotion we're doing - and it smelled of chocolate orange; not in a sickly way at all either. Loved it. The Limited Edition blushers are so so cute (but I would strictly be buying them for the packaging) and 17's Limited Edition Spring Vintage Love collection is so pastel sweet. Max Factor and Umberto Giannini can't go wrong in my books either - a really cool and easy way to apply eyeshadow, and massive massive hair. What more could you need?

I can't even justify buying them with my Boots points because I have overflowing baskets of beauty products and I physically can't buy anymore. Balls. What beauty products have you been lusting after lately?

details of the day #2

Friday, 25 February 2011

wake up feeling the same sick feeling i've had all week / weigh myself (it's a friday) and i've lost 2.5 pounds, yesss / get ready for uni / commit to my approx. 2.5 hour journey there / a regular day at uni: don't get told where the official hand-in place is, get some lunch at spoons and chat an irregular amount with friends, afternoon lecture that starts late and lasts about five minutes / train journey home: london victoria, why?! / come online and think... 'details' post as my face is not particularly cooperative right now but i haven't done an outfit post in a while... and here we are.

I'm about to enjoy chicken with roasted vegetables and cous cous ('they didn't add the second cous until 1979'; gotta love Chandler) courtesy of my mother and after that, I shall be researching and preparing some questions for an exciting email interview I have lined up for my Final Major Project. ALSO, I ordered the Sex and the City boxset (finally!) and plan on delving into that tonight.

Oh I do live the high-life, no?

all Dorothy Perkins

So I quickly popped into town today with my mum for a few necessary bits and bobs and, accidentally, bought this Dorothy Perkins lace/crochet top. And you know when you buy a piece and you instantly imagine a million scenarios it could feature in?! I immediately thought that it'd look best with denim shorts, obvy, and a bundle of gold jewellery. Throw on some sunnies and cute pair of sandals et voila!

I've included the tights in there for obvious reasons - a British summer is kind of an oxymoron and to be honest, I want to start wearing this outfit about... now? So tights would be neccessary. As would a fair amount of knitwear. But actually, did anyone else feel the warmth today? Lovely stuff.

I've also forgot to say - thank you to everyone who's filled out my survey for university. I'm so thankful and am having such fun reading your responses. If you haven't yet done it and would like to, you can here.

Also, thank you for everybody's sweet comments yesterday. Due to my current problems, my plans have irrevocably changed. Let's just say I'm hoping to wear far more outfits like the one above, which can only be a good thing even if it feels quite the opposite right now. More on my plans another time...

rain, rain, go away.

Wednesday, 23 February 2011

I'm sorry for the absence. I guess 'personal problems' is the way to excuse said absence. I find it completely wonderful how some bloggers are very open with their readers and share such inspiring, amazing or even heart-renching stories but I don't think I can. I'm sorry.

Anyway, I'm off out today with a friend for some chit-chat and a stroll 'round a shopping centre. I plan on returning this dress. I originally loved it - possibly from watching too much Boardwalk Empire and imagining myself in a loose-fitting number - but don't think it was quite as perfect as I thought it was. Well, it happens right? I'll exchange it for something a lot more 'me' hopefully. I'm also going to be on the lookout for some cycling shorts. I know River Island has some online... it's just a case of finding them in store. I have a t-shirt dress you see, and I feel it's necessary to wear some underneath. And wow, ramble much.

Glad to be back, and I hope inspiration strikes because right now, well, it's non-existent.

Whether you think it's bonkers or brilliant, you can't deny the British quirkiness is a breath of fresh air during the fashion weeks. I always go to House of Holland and Louise Gray for a genuine this-collection-will-make-me-happy outlook. I'm always admiring both designers' clashing prints, bursts of colour and energy; and this season is no exception.

a little obsessed

Thursday, 17 February 2011

As you can probably tell from a few of my outfit posts, I'm a little into headwear. I find hard headbands a little annoying - and sometimes painful - so much prefer headscarfs or pieces like the above. I guess the sky blue number is hard but hey, it's cute right?

In an almost-conscious effort to spend less money in the next few months, I'm leaning towards spending money on cute accessories like hair pieces, so as to keep looks interesting without spending a fortune. There are also such nice pieces at the moment that are perfectly spring-tastic - the above items range from £6 - £12. Alternatively, my Primark headband from my last outfit post was £2 I think. Hardly breaking the bank is it?

What are your go-to accessories to update your daily looks?

not all those who wander are lost

Wednesday, 16 February 2011

So the theme for my Final Major Project that I've mentioned a fair few times is 'adventure'. I know surveys can be annoying but this has just two questions, and they're not dull questions either. Someone who's done it for me already told me she had fun doing it, so that's good.

I would be really grateful if you'd spare a few minutes. Thank you.

she's back baby

Tuesday, 15 February 2011

denim jacket: H&M
cream crochet tee: New Look
black strappy top: New Look
navy bodycon skirt: H&M
black tights x 2: Boots
desert boots: Primark
flower headband: Primark
teacup necklace: Accessorize
cream stone ring: Boots

She's back! My denim jacket, that I love oh-so-dearly, is back. For some reason, she's been neglected over the winter months - I guess knitwear is just more preferable, right?! I bought it last year from H&M and love its fit and shade. I've noticed they have a very similar one this season though, just so's you know's.

Anyway, I was also in a pretty good mood today from wearing some of my new purchases that I got on Sunday - the crochet tee, desert boots and flower headband. Primark is truly wonderful with some of their accessories, although I'm sure not everyone agrees. I did bag myself a few bargains, which I'm sure you'll see over time.

The pitch for my project went quite well today, thank heavens. The rest of this week will now include extensive research (yay?!), lots of writing and a night out on Saturday, which I'm really looking forward to. I hope everyone's having a lovely week...

film recommendation #3

Monday, 14 February 2011

I know there's been a bit of hype surrounding this film and my other recommendations so far have been less well-known, but I couldn't resist posting about this beautiful film. Afterwards, you kind of sit back and realise that for a lot of Never Let Me Go your mouth was open in shock/awe/pain. You know that weird, uncomfortable - although not altogether unpleasant - feeling you get after certain films? Maybe a sense of unease? I guess I had that, if you even know what I'm talking about. I don't really know what else to say apart from 'watch it' - it's a film that you should definitely immerse yourself in before finding too much out about it.

It confirms my absolute love for Keira, Carey and the relatively-new Andrew who I can't wait to watch in The Social Network now. Enjoy...

look 26

Some quite lovely knitwear graced the Adam autumn/winter 2011 collection yesterday. We all know I like a good ol' jumper and I am particularly taken by this little baby! I love the different bands of texture and design and combined with a bit of fringing, what could be better? I hope the likes of Topshop will produce their very own knock-off for me to indulge in.

details of the day #1

wake up and still feel some pancake roll lodged in my throat from the delish takeaway the night before, lolz / gilmore girls in bed / shreddies / getting ready time / drive 45 minutes to a shopping centre - Lakeside if you must know / shop, a little too much at that / munch on a kit kat and slurp some diet coke before the ride home / get home and help mum with the dinner / check facebook / blog

And now I'm off to enjoy the roast...

P.S. Thought this could be a new type of post? Not that my life is ridiculously interesting but still... I won't stick to Sundays because they are probably the most laid-back day, but maybe once a week?! Let me know what you think...

No7 Speed Dry Nail Colour in Hot Pink
Barry M Instant Nail Effects

So I'm pretty sure that many of you have tried this miracle - its circulation in the bloggging world is c-razy - but I just wanted to show you some I made earlier. I'm not normally a bright-pink-kinda-gal but decided a bright colour underneath would work best. I'm so happy with the result, even if I did slightly mess up the thumbnails, because it looks like some fancy nail art that took a considerable amount of time, which of course it didn't.

And I always knew I had stubby fingers but I swear that they're not normally this stubby. Maybe I should have made them skinnier on Photoshop, no?! Ha.

Has anyone else given these a go? What's your experience been like?

denim shirt

Wednesday, 9 February 2011

denim shirt: Topshop
black lace vest: H&M
white vest: New Look
black ruffle bodycon skirt: H&M
black tights: Boots
brown brogues: Peacocks
leopard print headscarf: New Look
heart and key necklace: Boots

I haven't worn this shirt since last summer and felt like wearing it again, in a desperate attempt to push forward spring. I tend to wear darker colours in the winter, so the shirt is making me feel particularly summery today. Wow, really must stop wishing time away.

I'm about to head off for uni for a group discussion of our ideas for our final major projects. Thanks for all your lovely comments about that by the way! I kept changing my mind but I've come to a firm decision on what I want to do - let's just hope it doesn't get ripped to shreds!

Have a great day everyone - anyone doing anything particularly fancy?

the sales are my friend

Monday, 7 February 2011

Ok so I have been moaning - ever so slightly - about the sales and their still-annoying presence in shops but they have recently redeemed themselves in my eyes. Evidence:

A few weeks ago I purchased these mouth-watering clogs. I've wanted a pair for a while but found any decent pairs to be too expensive for me, which is just stupid when I probably won't get a huge amount of wear out of them. These Faith babies were £19.50 down from £65 I believe. What a bargain!

This selection of jewellery is what I mentioned here and is from Dorothy Perkins. Apart from the bauble-esque beauty, which was a little extravagant but irrestistible, the pieces were £1/£2 which made my day! I particularly love the black stone pendant and wore it out today.

On the other end of the scale, ELLE Collections is now a whopping £7! While a little miffed, I still decided to buy it - I thoroughly enjoy the creation, and find it quite a keepsake for my 'fashion' shelf. It's also great if you need inspiration or in my case, for my course. Having the key trends readily available in one, I'm going to say, 'bible' is invaluable to me.

Bought anything of interest lately? I'd love to see :)

love you

Been listening to The Free Design a lot lately.
Perfect accompaniment to my online furores.

Have an enjoyable Saturday evening everybody!
Oh, and... love you.

charity shop blouse

Thursday, 3 February 2011

floral print blouse: charity shop
high-waisted denim shorts: New Look
black tights: Boots
black lace booties: River Island
jewel ring: Debenhams/christmas present from Luke
blue polka dot earrings: Primark

I quickly popped into town yesterday to have a wee look in the charity shops. I only came out with this blouse but I love it. To me it's the perfect length, print, shape, and the neckline is so cute! I also had a peek in Dorothy Perkins and found the most gorgeous going-out dress for an outing I have planned in a couple of weeks. They also had a huge amount of sale jewellery that I would have bought full-price - pearl earrings, black stone necklace, chandelier earrings. I'm sure you'll see them all soon.

Oh, and excuse the sorry faces in these photos. I have to go to uni in a bit, and am kind of dreading it. We're starting our final major projects and I don't know what they'll think of my idea - scared much?! Wish me luck!

How is everyone's week so far?

tee me

Tuesday, 1 February 2011

It's relatively annoying that sale items are still everywhere. I'm just too excited for spring, instigating the need for new collections to entertain me. However, these tees and blouses from Zara are pretty spring-tastic and in the sale - the items range from £3.99 to £14.99. I'm particularly fond of the faded pink button-down shirt and the simple camel tee.

I'm a little worried about the displaying of my arms, though. I think being hidden away in layers of knitwear and my favourite coat has made me slack in the take-care-of-your-figure department this winter, forcing me to buy a Shake Weight. Time for arms to get uber fit, ya?
