i wish i could draw

The wonderful Laura over at Romance is Boring sketched this beautiful - the artistic flair that is, I'm not being big-headed! - picture of me. I was so taken aback, and completely touched that she would do this for me. It's definitely something I'll keep forever.

If you haven't seen her blog, go look now for terrific fashion sense, gorgeous inspiration and sketches to make you ridiculously envious.

spotty and curly

Saturday, 29 January 2011

spotty blouse: H&M
navy bodycon skirt: H&M
dusty rose cardi: Topshop
black tights: Boots
brogues: Peacocks
gold drop earrings: Topshop

Sorry for the awfully-quick photos and the rushed post that this is bound to be. It's my boyfriend's 21st birthday today so I'm about to head on over there and bombard him with presents. We might be spending the day, or what's left of it, in London taaaaaan.

My hair is practically impossible to curl, so sometimes I sleep - rather uncomfortably - in plaits, and this is the result. It doesn't really last all day but it adds volume anyway, so smiles all round. This outfit is also uber-comfy, which is required when you're tourist-ing it 'round London and possibly stuffing yourself with food...

Happy Birthday Luke!
And have a good weekend everybody.

swedish summer

Thursday, 27 January 2011

I know we're all craving summer - and this post isn't going to help! - but who else has spied this gorgeous Topshop collection? Swedish Summer is full of dusty blues, strawberry red, creams and whites. I'm also very fond of the prominent crochet pieces that will have to, somehow, make it into my life.

The sweet seventies vibe, along with the I'm-a-hippie-and-threw-this-together-in-five-minutes aesthetic, is warming my heart and despite my imaginary shopping basket making it above £500, some pieces will just have to be mine.

If you fancy anything, snap them up quick. Before I beat you to it...

someone like you

Can't stop listening to this off the new album <3
And isn't this particular video just fan-bloody-tastic?

cream blouse: New Look

shorts: H&M
brown belt: New Look
black tights: Boots
cream frill socks: Primark
black booties: Marks & Spencer
carousel necklace: Accessorize
ring: Boots

A pretty simple but comfortable outfit today. And yes, it's the shoes again, but they are seriously comfortable! I love wearing these sorts of colours at the moment and can't wait to take them through to the summer, despite the brights that are heading our way.

Also, I popped into Tesco this morning to buy some ingredients, and just attempted my first curry. I have to say, for a first attempt it was pretty swish. I'm also cooking dinner for the family tomorrow from my Jamie Oliver cookbook and will let you know if it's a complete disaster.

This week will hopefully include some charity shop rummaging, a trip to the cinema to see Black Swan and a trip to London for my boyfriend's 21st. Has anybody else got anything exciting to look forward to?

save face

Monday, 24 January 2011

I am in no way a beauty expert but from working at Boots, I've learned my fair share. I've always enjoyed facial skincare products anyway but since the launch of No7 Protect & Perfect Intense and all that shizz, I've been forced to pay even more attention. Did the scientific studies scare anybody else?!

Apart from the odd slip-up, I try to do a proper regime every morning and night now. This may seem like common knowledge but the following is the general consensus:

eye make-up remover / cleanser / toner / serum / moisturiser / eye cream

Obviously sometimes this changes: you won't remove eye make-up in the morning, nor do you have to use serum or eye cream if you don't wish to. I've also shown you some extras that I use. You're meant to exfoliate about once a week, and I've put the hot cloth cleanser there too because that's sometimes nice to use in the bath with all that luscious steam, ya? I also can't live without my Carmex, and find a strawberry mask irrestible.

Since taking more care, my skin is so much better - no lie. I'm hoping that by starting to use anti-ageing stuff at my age, I'll never grow old. Twenty forever - sounds good, right?

Does anybody else have a strict facial skincare regime, or any tips they wish to share?

£15 each

While my boyfriend and I drove to a local town to get a subway - oh the joys of country life! - we had a quick wander around George. Along with a cute maxi skirt and surprisingly nice underwear, these floral shirts jumped out at me. Sheertastically good with enough length to create a billowing tucked-in look, they're perfect for Spring and almost made it to the till with me. I shouldn't really be spending money right now though so I miraculously restrained and instead, thought I'd show you lovely people.

Oh, and sorry for my short absence! This week has been the run-up to my dissertation deadline but it's handed in now - a day ahead of time I might add. Thank you, thank you very much. Handing it in felt a bit odd to say the least because I've been working so hard on it for so long but still, the sense of freedom is definitely kicking in.

It's my beloved 'Reading Week' next week and I have a myriad of plans that don't include, thank the lord, essay writing.

ring adornment

top image, left to right: Dorothy Perkins, Debenhams (Christmas gift from the boy), Dorothy Perkins, Dorothy Perkins, Boots.
bottom image, left to right: Birdy's Boutique, Boots, Boots, Primark, Accessorize, Love Lace Creations (made by Robyn, won in a giveaway).

My obsession with rings has slowly grown over the last few months. This is pretty much my collection, and I can't decide on a favourite at all. I generally prefer goldy/bronzy tones but the purple- or pink-infused rings are also pretty special. I think rings can completely lift an outfit or look, so I'll rarely be seen without one now.

Who else is having a bit of a moment with rings right now?
Oh, and excuse the loser-ish thumbs - who knew they looked like that from that angle?!

cropped yellow zebra blouse: christmas present/H! by Henry Holland
high-waisted denim shorts: New Look
black belt: unknown
black boots: Marks & Spencer
black tights: Boots
bracelets: Claire's Accessories
bird ring: Primark

Although I'm not really into bright colours, this has to be my favourite top that I currently own. My wonderful boyfriend got it for me for Christmas - with only gentle nudging from myself - and it looks even better than it did online. It's sheer, zebra-tastic, Peter Pan-collarific and buttercup yellow - how much better could it get?! It actually has a tie-knot element at the bottom but I tucked it in because it looked slightly odd with the belt...

These are also my first pair of high-waisted denim shorts; shocker I know. I'm a little bit in love because I don't appear to have short legs anymore and my upper-half looks positively petite! Overall, I'm quite happy with my outfit today - helped by the appearance of my beloved black booties, of course.

Oh, and excuse the top-right image - I was listening to 'Check It Out' by will.i.am, Nicki Minaj and Cheryl Cole. Such a guilty pleasure, right?

film recommendation #2

Thursday, 13 January 2011

I came across this film in one of my many roamings of imdb and decided it had to be watched. It follows the lonely life of Lars Lindstrom, played by Ryan Gosling, who orders a sex doll off the internet. He sees her as the love of his life though, and the whole town end up treating her like any other person. The combination of innocence, romance and family, as well as a perceived mental illness, make for an insightful story that melts your heart.

nothing beats a bit of quirk

Wednesday, 12 January 2011

So I'm feeling particularly crap today - dissertation isn't good enough, bla bla bla - and decided that nothing beats some quirky fun to make you feel better. I'm particularly drawn to the Moomin compact and Mrs Fry's Diary, because Stephen Fry rocks my world. I would never-in-a-million-years buy A Simples Life, but it made me LOL nonetheless.

I've also watched this video approximately 56709865 times today, and laughed every time. I'm particularly taken by the dance moves at 0:13 - very cool.

Have a pleasant and quirky evening!

rusty lace shift dress: Topshop
suspender tights: River Island
black suede heels: Topshop
gold ball drop earrings: Topshop
nail varnish: No7 Speed Dry in Grey Skies

I went for that long-awaited shopping trip yesterday - and on student loan day, what a coincidink! - and found the most perfect dress. I'm not going anywhere fancy today by the way, I just wanted to show you it. I feel like a sixties sweetheart, and the colour is that gorgeous rusty brown that keeps looking wonderful on fellow bloggers.

Because I'm such a short-arse, I wasn't sure on the length - not that it stopped me from buying it! - and wished they'd had it in the Petite section. On reflection, however, I've noticed that when I raise my arms (see Image 3) it rises up a signifcant amount due to the long sleeves, so I guess it couldn't be any shorter. Note: when I raised my arms fully, the image became non-blog worthy, let's just say that. Hmm, wearing this outfit could be fun!

I also got some other wonderful pieces from the shopping trip, so you'll hopefully see all of that in due course. Has anybody else scored some wow-I-love-you-more-than-my-mum pieces lately? I kid, I kid - I'm just a little in love right now.

ny jumpers

Friday, 7 January 2011

I've seriously been considering my wardrobe as of late, probably spurred on by an upcoming shopping trip I hope will happen at some point next week, amidst the dissertation drama. And I've come to the conclusion that, although I own a fair amount of jumpers, I need more.

With the New York trip rearing its beautiful head, I was thinking layers in the form of jumpers and cardi's, rather than an annoying coat, which would find itself being taken on and off all the time I imagine. Any New Yorker's with advice for an April trip? I hear it's not too cold but quite rainy.

Anyway, I intend on snapping up one of the above beauties - Topshop knitwear does make me swoon, and the colour palette is darling - or something a little less expensive, maybe. Primark's being raved about right now, so I'm going to go there to hopefully purchase something from their new collection.

Other items on my shopping list: Lee Stafford's Hair Growth Treatment (I'm not silly enough to believe this by the way, I've just heard great things about how soft it makes your hair!), a rolling pin, a birthday present for the boy and some kind of fancy new headwear.

grey day

Thursday, 6 January 2011

grey jumper with elbow pads: H&M
denim shorts: H&M
black tights: Boots
socks: unknown
black lace boots: River Island
floral cameo necklace: H&M
stone ring: Christmas present from the wonderful Luke, Debenhams
grey knit headpiece: giveaway prize made by the beautiful Nnenna at star-crossed smile

lipstick: Rimmel Moisture Renew Lipstick in Electric Plum

So today was wonderfully-filled with the dentist and my dissertation. Oh, the joys of life! Who ever thought that my dissertation would feature a naked woman and discuss phallic representation in great depth, huh? Not me.

Erm, anyway... I felt like dressing comfortably today and this jumper always does the trick. It's possibly my favourite item from H&M and I just can't wear it enough. I'm so impressed with H&M at the moment. This necklace arrived yesterday, along with some other summery pieces that will surely crop up on here soon. Anybody else excited for summer?!

And I just want to say thank you to Nnenna for my gorgeous headband - I love it! It was beautifully wrapped when it arrived at my house too, along with a sweet Christmas card. If you haven't already seen her blog, go and take a looky. She knits some lovely pieces and has the best smile ever.

london eye & eyeskate

Monday, 3 January 2011

Just thought I'd share my pictures with you from last Thursday at the London Eye with my boyfriend Luke, who had never been on it before! We ice-skated afterwards and had a delicious Nando's, perfection.

ten and under

Sunday, 2 January 2011

lilac lace shorts; £5
flower print body; £4
purple stone pendant; £4
black fedora; £3
lilac tee; £10
grey and black maxi skirt; £10

I was just browsing through the sale at River Island because I have a voucher and was pretty impressed that such good stuff had made it into the sale. I've never been massively into the brand - purely because it's a little too chavvy - but it's definitely had some lovely pieces lately.

Those gorgeous lilac silk shorts haven't sold out in any size, which shocks me a little. Paired with a chunky knit sweater and that gorgeous stone pendant? Is that just me? And sorry for the purple overload, but when it hit the high street last summer, I got a little excited and still haven't properly embraced the gorgeous colour. I also desperately want a perfectly-fitting maxi skirt for summer this year and, ideally, a cute fedora.

I'm a little excited for summer now - anyone else?

anything to avoid

So today has been ridiculously unproductive. I'm meant to be working on my dissertation but have been doing literally anything to avoid it. Including waking up reasonably early and making scrummy biscuits, watching films, ironing - that's right - my neglected pile of clothes, voluntarily laying the table for our Sunday roast and sitting through hours of holiday videos with my family. Well done, Rosie.

I've been in my pyjamas all day yet instead of feeling all relaxed and happy, I'm feeling very very guilty right now. Well, at least I have my fresh biscuits to console me. Oh, and that's one of my new doilies right there - cute, no?

Happy Sunday!

2011

Saturday, 1 January 2011

There's something about the first post of a new year that yields to expectations. I was a little lost on what to post about so I've decided to mention some things I'm looking forward to...

1) New York

I did mention before that I've won the opportunity to go to New York with some people from my course at university, and I couldn't be more excited. I've always wanted to go and am literally counting down the days!

2) Graduation

I'm going to be so happy when I graduate. I think I'm just a bit fed up of education now. I absolutely love learning and (almost) everything it entails, but I think it's time for a change of scenery. I don't have the foggiest what I'm going to do next though... maybe that's part of the excitement?

3) Florida

My boyfriend's family have invited me to go with them to Florida again this year - I went last June for the first time and loved it completely. I can't wait to explore again, and will lap up the sunshine gladly after all this cold weather.

4) 21st

I'm not a big birthday-celebrater and 21 doesn't mean too much over here in the UK but still. I feel like when I'm 21, I'll be a lot more grown-up. I can't decide whether this is a good or bad thing though?!

5) Barcelona

I envisaged a European adventure this summer, but with my funds going towards NY and Florida, it probably won't happen. I'm still adamant that I'm going to Barcelona though - my number one destination choice in Europe right now.

I've also got some general resolutions for the year, although I try not to worry about them too much. I'd ideally like to lose a bit of weight (but doesn't everybody?), graduate with flying colours, find a job I'm happy to wake up for and have a damn good year.

Has anybody else got any plans for the next 12 months?
