"How can you trust your feelings when they can just disappear like that?"
I knew I'd love Blue Valentine from the off.
With Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling as the two central characters and producers, you just can't go wrong. Along with the most beautiful script and soundtrack (produced by Grizzly Bear), the film is poetically and visually effing brilliant.
It focuses on a working-class married couple going through the trial that is life. Switching back and forth from their past to their present, the difference in their happiness is heartbreaking. One moment you'll be smiling along with them as they discover each other, and the next you'll be crying with them as they struggle to laugh anymore.
That's why I wanted to watch this film - its purpose, which I read about so long ago now, was to be starkingly honest about real love. It's not perfect. It never will be. Hell, sometimes it just doesn't work out.
And I have to say - though some may find this unimportant - that the credits are the best I've seen in my life. Ever. I couldn't find a video of them to show you, so I'll guess you'll just have to see for yourselves...
