everyday make-up & new hair

Tuesday, 30 November 2010

So I thought I'd show you what my face looks like most days and give you the low-down on what's in my make-up bag at the moment. I love seeing what everybody else buys and uses; it's such great inspiration.

Right, so here goes:
MaxFactor Colour Adapt foundation in Creamy Ivory
MaxFactor Pan Stick in Fair OR Benefit Boi-ing for concealing
Benefit Erase Paste
17 Pressed Powder in Delicate Beige
Benefit Dandelion blusher
Rimmel Professional Eyebrow Pencil in Hazel
Bourjois Ombre Stretch eyeshadow in Flexi Brown
No7 Intense Volume mascara in Black

So that's the stuff I put on every day (unless I'm having a lazy day at home) but there are other bits and bobs I use ocassionally like Benefit Lemon Aid brightener and Benefit That Gal primer. I also obviously change up the eye make-up every now and again and regularly use Colorsport 24-Hour Black Eyeliner because it's out-of-this-world. Eyeshadow colours change ocassionally but I really like my current brown shade. My mascara changes a lot once I've finished what I'm on because I'm never satisfied! I recently bought loads of Bourjois mascaras for about 50p at work and can't wait to use them.

I also dyed my hair the day before yesterday, and I have to admit I didn't think it would be quite so dark. My hair was just all over the place colour-wise and totally root-tastic, so I decided to give it an all-over colour to get it looking somewhat normal. I've dyed my hair countless times and am forever wondering what colour to go for next but I'm actually quite content with this shade, even though it wasn't quite what it showed on the box... what do you think?

[Obviously I realise the outfit isn't quite season-appropriate, especially today (um, snow much?), but I'm currently in a toasty-ish house and this dress is uber comfy-liscious!]

a friend's birthday

Monday, 29 November 2010

On Saturday night, I celebrated my friend Ross' birthday with some other friends. This is me with the lovely ladies of the evening [left-to-right: me, Charlotte, Charlee & Sophie) being sensible and then not-so-sensible. We are a little odd.

It was a night filled with Schloer (for me anyway, the others weren't so sober!), shivering (we were in a shed... I mean, 'game room') and charades (which I ROCKED at).

And actually being his birthday today, Happy Birthday Ross!

topshop tees

Friday, 26 November 2010

I love the range of tees that Topshop always carry: they're never dull or predictable or even your average 'tee'. They tend to air some kind of quirkiness about them, which is great. I've recently bought some oversized sports tees in burgundy and navy, and then two gorgeous scalloped numbers in camel and bright blue.

I equally love these tie-knot ones. The burgundy and dark grey versions particularly grab me for their contrasting necklines. You may think I'm being incredibly boring, discussing simple tops on my blog, but I'm currently really into simple designs and almost 'plain' tops - I prefer to be a lot more adventurous with the rest of my outfit!

I might just have to snap one of these up and dream of it teamed with a pair of cut-off denim shorts and bare feet, absorbing the sunshine on an outing involving a fanciful picnic. Sounds far-off with all this snow-talk, right?

ten things i love

I was tagged by a wonderful blogger, The Dandizette, to compile a list of ten things I love right now, so here goes:

1. lipstick

A recent obsession of mine has been lipstick. My colours of choice are bright reds, orangey reds, only-just-visible shades and pinky hues. I do own a darker shade (like the colour the girls are wearing in my November Inspiration) but I'm too sure if it suits me.

I just think lipstick can completely change your look and really lift an outfit.

2. vegetables

People think I'm crazy but I just LOVE vegetables. Definitely my favourite kind of food!

3. multiple rings

A lot of people are sporting this almost-hippie look of adorning every finger in a sweet-arse ring. I am one of those people. My collection is slowly growing, and I try to wear a couple everyday. The problem is, I'm not exactly rich and so buy rings that give me blue fingers. This results in not wearing any for a few days while my fingers return to their normal selves. This can't be good, right?

4. travelling/visiting new places

I love visiting other countries. My favourite places I've seen so far have been Prague, Australia, California and Venice. Heaven! I'm also hoping to travel next summer across a few European countries - I particularly want to see Florence (above) and Barcelona.

5. painted nails

Although I'm awful at painting my nails, I love it and the finished look. My favourite colours right now are Mushroom by Barry M (even though the quality is god awful), Vintage Pink by Models Own and Grace Green by Models Own.

6. billy joel

I just love him.

7. cake

Second to vegetables is CAKE. It's the ultimate indulgence and I could eat it all the live-long-day, if not for the waistline. The above picture of cake on a lolly stick is my idea of heaven.

8. tights

I feel so at ease in tights compared to trousers: they're so comfortable and easy. Admittedly, I normally just wear plain ol' black ones because they, obviously, go with everything. But now and then, I do like to mix it up with a stockinged pair (like the ones above), some spotty ones or a freaky pair. Back in my Sixth Form days, I used to wear brightly coloured tights (yellow, red, green, blue, purple - you name it!) every day. That fashion phase is gone now (thank the lord) but it could resurface...

9. reading

This image is so true, ha. Reading is my ultimate pleasure. At the moment, I'm so swamped with university work that I haven't read for pleasure in, what seems like, an eternity. I can't wait 'til the chaos is over so I can get onto reading that Jill Mansell novel I ordered months ago.

10. my wand

That's right: my Harry Potter wand ;)

ebay beautie

Thursday, 25 November 2010

I bought this beaut of a bag off Ebay last week. I think it's perfect bar the size - perfect colour, perfect strap length, perfect structure etc. The problem is, as you can probably tell, it barely has any room in there. I can't even fit my purse inside, which basically makes the bag useless to me. How annoying! I don't want to get rid of it, even though it wasn't the cheapest Ebay purchase. What shall I doooo?

And I apologise for this awfully-shot photograph but my tripod (yesss, I ordered a tripod!) hasn't arrived yet. It was sorta awfully balanced somewhere in my porch... but anyway, this is what I wore today.

off-white blouse: charity shop find
khaki cardigan: Peacocks
burgundy shorts: River Island
brown brogues: Peacocks

Oh, also: apologies for the pose. I suck.

going the distance

Tuesday, 23 November 2010

I watched Going the Distance last night and fell hard for, not only the film, but Drew Barrymore's gorgeous hair. It made me want to chop my hair and dye it a beautiful shade of honey blonde. She looked absolutely beautiful in the film, and her relationship with Justin Long was enviable - shame they're not together anymore in real life.

I found myself laughing out loud throughout the film, as its humour and themes were so realistic. Definitely a girly film worth watching!

guess what i saw last night?

Monday, 22 November 2010

These were my two kind of moods yesterday pre-HP.
Post-HP moods were pretty much the same ;)

topshop rings

Saturday, 20 November 2010

I have a craving to add more rings to my slowly-growing collection. I've especially fallen for the envelope ring and that gorgeous pale pink treat. Which are your favourites from Topshop's current offerings?

notebook heaven

Friday, 19 November 2010

Notebooks excite me. I am a journalist so maybe this obsession is allowed, right? Anyway, I bought these boooootiful notebooks from Artbox who I only discovered yesterday (delivered today! Marry me, Artbox?). They were all really cheap, no more than £2, and for such cute designs, they are just utter bargains.

My definite favourites are the two Parisian beauties that have an oil-cloth finish and lots of cute illustrations and phrases throughout inside as well.

The only problem is, I don't want to use them.

seven things

I got tagged by the beautiful Helen at Bits and Bobs to divulge seven things about myself, which is definitely a good idea as I've kind of just launched into this blog without saying who I am...

1. I'm a final year Fashion Journalism student at the University for the Creative Arts in Epsom, Surrey. I've had this niggle since the start of my course that I chose the wrong degree (English Literature instead?) but I'm kind of getting into my groove now. I love writing, no matter what it's about, and fashion is just ingrained in me I think, ha.

2. I look like a complete noob in the above picture because I've just been soaked on a rapid-ride but this is probably one of the happiest moments of my life: eating a chocolate frog in The Wizarding World of Harry Potter. For those HP cinics or people who don't get it, whatever, and for you HP fanatics out there, I got Godric Gryffindor on my card ;)

3. I hate cotton wool. With a loathing, hard kind of passion.

4. I read like there's no tomorrow. Give me a book, I'll read it. I never understand people who don't enjoy reading, do you? It's such an experience.

5. I have no idea what I want to do in life but my ideal job would be to work for a company who wanted me to travel the world, write what I see and report back. Whether I'm trekking through the Amazon rainforest, canoe-ing it in Vietnam or enjoying some pancakes in America, I want to do it.

6. I want to own a litter of kittens one day and name them after The Jungle Book characters, depending on colours. I also plan to own a pug at some point, if I have the means to look after one. You know you have to clean inside their folds, right? Yuck :)

7. I'm currently writing my dissertation on pin-up culture in the 40s and 50s. I love getting funny looks on the train when people see a book entitled 'FETISH'. All part of the course!

my summer of love

Thursday, 18 November 2010

I watched My Summer of Love (2004) the other night for the first time. It was just one of those random films I stumbled across and decided to watch. It stars Emily Blunt (of The Devil Wears Prada fame) and Natalie Press who I didn't really know much about.

Key themes of obsession, rebellion, deception, religion and passion fight each other throughout this film, leaving you a little unsure as to the plot. However, you do find yourself enjoying the story, strangely enough. It's a film by the BBC which, biasedly, makes it a must-see for me and its odd depiction of superficial love is a reason to keep watching.

This film is for you if you'll give anything a go, and have enjoyed other BBC films. I wouldn't call it a hit but the members of imdb have given it a 6.9 which is pretty good on their standards!

I actually really like Emily Blunt but have barely seen any of her films. I'll have to watch more - the next on my list being Sunshine Cleaning, a film about a mother who starts a crime scene clean-up service to help pay for her son's tuition fees... sounds like a winner!

graze

Wednesday, 17 November 2010

I hopped onto the graze bandwagon at the end of last week and I'm so glad I did. graze is a company who believe in healthy eating that actually tastes good. They say:

"Before graze, we couldn't get through the day without our daily muffin fix. So we tracked down healthy foods that actually taste good and started putting them in a box. Now we eat lots more healthy food and far fewer muffins."

The best thing about this website is that you get to choose the day your box gets delivered - great if you have a day planned out where you'll want lots of nibbles! - and you get to rate the different foods on offer on their website, making sure that you won't get sent olives if you hate olives or cranberries if you hate cranberries. The box is also quite small so can be taken around easily in your bag!

I'm so happy with my graze box. As you can see, I got:
* great fire dragon
* yin & yang
* honeycomb flapjack
* west country cheddar, red onion & chutney focaccia

I literally just got it (our postman hates us) so I haven't devoured everything yet. Although, whilst typing this, the box of great fire dragon has slowly been mauled to death. YUM.

graze seem to always have an offer on, but if you want your first box totally free, just enter this code:

Happy graze-ing!

faux fur leopard-print coat: New Look
brown brogues: Peacocks
black pleated skirt: River Island
navy tee: Topshop
tights: Boots
necklace: Boots

Robyn (from The Robyn Diaries) and I went to South Kensington today for a spot of uni research - V&A, Kensington Gardens, The Serpentine Gallery etc. We had fun befriending squirrels, messing about with mirrors (see below) and generally getting inspiration, as per our tutor's request.

[edit: the squirrels actually climbed up our legs and were, at some points, quite scary. still love them though!]

I've made a little video of us wandering around Kensington Gardens, as we refused to pay £11 to actually get inside the Palace! The video quality is pretty shoddy as I only used my cheapo camera and the editing was quick and on a shoddy editing programme, so all I can say is forgive me! I just thought it was a bit of fun...

damn the watson

Two Emma Watson posts within a week... what can I say? I'm obsessed. Though this is the last one I swear - for a while anyway. I just had to post her in this beautiful dress. I love how she paired it with that statement necklace and those sweet-arse Mary Janes. Her hair is looking totally natural on her now as well, and teamed with that winter-y pink lipstick she couldn't look more perfect.

This blog wasn't even intended to include celebrities but I feel that Emma is the exception, you know?
So what do you think of her outfit?

leopard print

Sunday, 14 November 2010

So I did do a spot of shopping today. Managed to return the baseball jacket and pinafore dress to New Look (you can see these items in this post - the dress was much more primary school than I thought it'd be and the jacket... I just wouldn't wear it). I exchanged them for even better goodies - a gorgeous leopard print fur coat, a black lace dress and a leopard print hair piece. More on those later!

I also managed to score those cutie booties from River Island (see below) and they fit like a dream. Also in my shopping bag was this hat from Topshop - it's actually going to be for a fancy dress party I'm going to soon but no doubt it'll find itself in my everyday wardrobe because it's so precious!

My final purchase was the grey leopard print headpiece that you can see above. Loser-ish photos aside, it's actually pretty sweet.

Leopard print has clearly taken over my life... has it yours?

black booties

[clockwise from top-left: Topshop, Clarks, H&M & River Island]

I'm in desperate need of some cutie-pa-tootie black booties! My current pair are a bit dated and, shall we say, holey: resulting in a not-so-happy Rosie last year at Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park freezing due to wet feet.

Have completely fallen for River Island's lace wonders but thought I'd show you some others that have caught my eye. I might take a wee shopping trip tomorrow for a few bits and bobs and will definitely look those babies up - only £29.99, who could resist?

P.S. I'm a loser. I just had some more beautiful comments awaiting me this evening and I deleted them. I'm just so used to deleting the majority of my emails, that it was just habit. I did actually read them though, so I'm sorry if yours is one of the deleted! I'm very annoyed. *Doofus*

emma watson, you hot piece of ass

Thursday, 11 November 2010

I wish so badly that I could have been there tonight. Emma looks absolutely stunning and it's so great to see her sporting her new freedom with that cute haircut and oh-so-short black lace number. Pure envy.

new york state of mind

My biggest regret in life is stopping to learn the piano; and when I gave up ballet lessons. What a stupid, stupid girl I was.

This is one of my all-time favourite songs and I just love Billy Joel. I'm going in for this competition at university at the moment, where you get the chance to go to New York and meet Parsons students, do some sight-seeing and generally fall in love with New York. Well, that's what I intend to do if I get the opportunity. I desperately, desperately, more than desperately want to go...

FINGERS CROSSED!

home comforts

I mentioned dotcomgiftshop in a previous post about my christmas wishlist and deemed it appropriate to mention them again, as they're just so damn cute. Their selection is varied and the items they carry are adorable, ranging from crockery to decorations to cushions. I've selected a few of my favourite pieces above - with the owl doorstop being my number one! - and aren't those christmassy things perfect too? They have such fun christmas decorations and that old-fashioned advent calendar is just beautiful.

The website really gets me in a homey mood. My situation does not match this: I still live at home, in a bedroom/study of my parents that doesn't reflect my taste in the slightest. Boo. Looking at dotcomgiftshop and images like those below (Zara Home & Urban Outfitters Home - lush) makes me so excited to own my own place someday, where I intend to decorate to my heart's content.

I guess I'll just have enjoy wishful thinking 'til then...
